A Little

About Me

After my sons, computers, technology and education are my passions. I have been working with Information Technology and education for over 20 years. I have had the opportunity to work as a consultant, corporate trainer, college instructor, university instructor, program coordinator in the private and public areas, ranging from small colleges and companies to the United Nations (UNESCO) and Microsoft.

I always say that I am a very privileged individual for being able to turn my passion into my professional. That makes me look forward to coming to work, teach and coordinate courses and programs, be it a Monday morning or Friday afternoon. It is a real pleasure in my life and when we achieve a good balance in life, everything flows better.

  • Masters Information Technology (USA)
  • BSc. Education - Adult Education - (Ca)

My teaching philosophy

in a nutshelL

My teaching philosophy in the field of information technology is rooted in student-centred learning, practical application, and critical thinking. By creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, I aim to empower students to become active learners, critical thinkers, and collaborative problem solvers. Through this approach, I strive to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary to thrive in the dynamic world of information technology, regardless of delivery mode: face-to-face, online, synchronous or asynchronous

My teaching philosophy

hands-on

In the realm of IT education, I recognize the importance of keeping pace with technological advancements and industry trends. I strive to incorporate real-world examples, case studies, and hands-on experiences into my teaching to bridge the gap between theory and practice. By providing practical applications of IT concepts, I aim to instill in students a deeper understanding of how these concepts translate into tangible solutions and outcomes.

My teaching philosophy

engagement

Central to my teaching philosophy is the belief that students learn best when they are actively engaged in the learning process. I employ a variety of teaching strategies, such as active learning techniques, collaborative projects, and discussions, to encourage students to take ownership of their learning. By actively involving students in the classroom, I foster their curiosity, encourage them to explore different perspectives, and promote their critical thinking skills.

My teaching philosophy

inclusiveness

I believe in creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment that values diversity and promotes teamwork and collaboration. I encourage students to bring their unique experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives to the classroom. By fostering an inclusive atmosphere, I aim to create a space where all students feel valued and respected, and where their contributions are acknowledged and celebrated.

My teaching philosophy

Teamwork

To promote teamwork and collaboration, I incorporate group projects, peer evaluations, and interactive activities into my teaching. By working in teams, students learn not only from their own experiences but also from the diverse perspectives and expertise of their peers. This collaborative approach prepares students for the realities of the IT industry, where teamwork and effective communication skills are vital for success.

educational leadership

I have taken leadership roles in addition to teaching in most of the colleges and universities I have worked for so far. My leadership roles have materialized in the role of program coordination in a very broad sense. Coordinating faculty, courses, program reviews, PAC meetings, applied research takes a fair amount of my time.

I had the opportunity to help design and implement and entire post graduate certificate program at Lambton College in Toronto, namely Mobile Application Development and two entire programs of post-graduate level to international students, in the areas of Information Technology and Business at Fanshawe college, London south campus.

The latter has required a lot of time because the programs were created from scratch, therefore, I had to work with program map development to course development to daily coordination activities, frequently serving as the liaison between students and faculty and the associate dean. Given that most of our currently faculty are part-time or partial-load instructors, making the liaison is quite challenging at times.

It is also in the capacity of program coordinator that I contact and interact with potential employers via the PAC (Program Advisory Committee).

When it comes to new or upgrade course material review, I also count with the help of most faculty. Some coaching is required here mainly in terms of the use of UDL, AODA / accessibility, ease of use, and formative and summative evaluations.

Lately, I have tried to work hard in the area of EDI (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) awareness which I consider of paramount importance for the future of our students. Again here, some coaching is usually necessary so other instructors follow at least the basics of EDI in classroom.

Fortunately, the programs have been successful so far and those students commitment with the learning process and their future have securing jobs in important organizations across London area as well as in Toronto and other provinces.

Technology project face-to-face using zoom

My technology project was on a technique called code along in which students and professors code part of the exercises or assignment in order to get familiar with the new topic. Group use of Zoom at this point. Towards the end of the class, students are to complete a simple part of the exercise "in-class" and submit to a DRAFT folder in FOL which is worth 10% of the final grade. Students have then until the following week to complete a more complex task - built on top of what they developed in class - which is worth 90%. This approach has helped in many different areas: 1) attendance has increased since those who do not submit the DRAFT at the end of class wont be allowed to submit the FINAL; 2) students are supposed to test retention and transmission of knowledge still in class; 3) students are supposed to practice analysis and syntheses at home. The level of engagement has been awesome using this methodology.
